Director of Quality
Thomas Dukes, MSW, MS, EdD is Director of Quality at Community Ventures in Living (CVL). The mission of CVL is to assist and support persons who are developmentally disabled and their families to establish and maintain homes that are truly their own. The services of the agency are founded on the belief that every individual has the right to live as a valued and accepted member of the community. Recognizing that from time to time everyone needs support, CVL strives to help individuals who have disabilities and their families to live as independently as is appropriate and to create an environment where dignity, a positive social role, inclusion in the community, self-direction, and feelings of self-worth are enhanced through supporting individual strengths, relationships and the acquisition of life skills.
Dr. Dukes was formerly Associate Professor of Counseling at Rhode Island College and Director of the Graduate Program in School Counseling in the Department of Counseling, Educational Leadership, and School Psychology. For sixteen years he taught aspiring school and mental health counselors at the graduate level. Before that he practiced as a child, adolescent, and family therapist for over a decade. He completed his doctorate in Developmental Studies at Boston University’s School of Education. His doctoral research examined the promotion of resilience among adolescents through increasing self-understanding in a small group intervention. He has made professional presentations locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.
Dr. Dukes also consults regularly with independent and public schools, providing clinical supervision and program development expertise to practicing school counselors. His research interests are focused on the promotion of resilience among children, adolescents, and adults.
